I’ve been a climber for thirty years and a professional historian since 1995.

As a teenager, I began technical climbing in the Cascades. I later moved to California, and although I’ve since climbed in the Rockies, the Swiss and French Alps and the Dolomites, the Sierra Nevada is my home range. When I was climbing seriously, my specialty was bouldering, although I never lost my taste for long, classic routes in the mountains.

While in school, I worked as an athletic trainer, gymnastics coach and construction worker. After some time studying in the life sciences, I became a historian.

My appointment is in modern US history, although I also spend a fair bit of time in Europe. I have longstanding research and teaching interests in frontier history, environmental history, and history and theory.
